// Members

These are the wonderful members of GUTS, year 2011-2012! Want to join us? Contact us! This colour indicates the member's role in Vernon God Little. This one indicates board position and other.

Jeroen Alkema Brad, Bus Driver This 23 year old wannabe scientist has developed a passion for being strange, overly enthusiastic, and well.. plain weird. So he just had to go and act. With a great passion for everything but especially science (-fiction) and fantasy in many forms, no not larping, he still somehow manages to get bored and play way to many videogames. Enough info? Good :) (read that in palpatine’s voice! if not shame on you!).

Jetty Bergsma Board Liaison / Ella Keeter As theatre is one of the greatest joys in my life, it was only logical that I joined GUTS. This joyous event happened about one and a half year ago, and it hasn’t gotten any less fun since. I really like that the society is entirely in English, as I am a second year English Language and Culture student. As a true English-nerd my favourite place in the world is London and I visit it as often as I get the chance. Next to theatre I enjoy singing, playing flute and mainly just hanging out and having a laugh with friends. I might be considered a little peculiar (another reason why I adore being around my fellow GUTSies, it’s like being amongst my own kind), but I’m always very enthusiastic  and bouncy.

Helen Brouwer Judge Helen Gurie Helen is a second-year student of English. She likes rock and metal music and makes jewelry from beads. Her favourite thing to do is reading (especially fantasy and an occasional chicklit). In Vernon Helen will play Helen, which is a total coincidence (really!).

Jamie Beale Brown Sherrif Porkorney, Mr Deutschman, and more... I am a student of International and European law from the wet and windy British Isles. Since the law does not indulge my natural predilection towards mimicry and expression, I joined GUTS in the worthy hope of fulfilling my debasing dream of acting like a fool in front of an apathetic audience. I shall be playing multiple characters of a deplorable nature in Vernon, each of whom will say some pretty outlandish and outrageous things purely for shock value. I'll be playing the homophobic Sheriff Porkorney with a strong influence from Clint Eastwood's sociopathic Dirty Harry, the local criminal Prosecutor, and a secret character that I can't talk about for fear of spoilers. I'll also be getting shot in the back several times for this production. There's probably a lot of people out there who will derive an unhealthy level of satisfaction from my staged death, so rather than be concerned about this, let me just say I'm happy to oblige them. This will be the second time I've ever been involved in a play and the first one was way back in school where I played a clumsy, tall fellow who could barely dance in rhythm. Some things never change.

Rixt van Dongera Stagehelp (crew) As crew-member Rixt until now has basically done nothing. A moment of insanity has caused her to perform in a Frisian play this year, so she had no choice but to leave the actors group and join the crew of Vernon God Little. Next to acting, Rixt enjoys to jump up and down all of the time, whilst singing "what a beautiful morning." She does not have any plan for the future, but suggestions are always welcome.

Kilian Evang Stagehelp (crew) Kilian is a PhD student in computational linguistics. Apart from language and computers, he has been fascinated with and active in the world of theatre since high school days. He likes freshly laundered pullovers, checkboxes, Mondays, trees, elements of robustness, red dots, secret paths, elevated positions and fog. He does not like endnotes and Sundays.

Louisa Gossé Little Old Lady, Lally’s Mom, Pelayo’s wife This is Louisa. She's 20 years old and in her 1st year of studying Psychology. In the play she's an old, blind woman and a slightly crazy Hispanic. As for the rest she's still trying to figure out something interesting to tell you guys. She'll let you know when she succeeds!

Thomas Groenbroek Pastor Gibbons, Mr Keeter, Brian Thomas is studying to become a speech therapist and that is all we know about Thomas (besides the fact that he doesn’t reply to his e-mails ).

Elsemiek Hes Chairwoman Elsemiek is second year student of English. What she has learnt so far is how to say very little in as many sentences as possible. We won't attempt to that here. After being almost all of the board last year and playing a paranoid bird in Alice in Wonderland, she decided to combine all of them and become chairwoman (or: GUTSmother) instead.

Nienke Hillen Court Officer, Kid in Braces, Stephanie, Chrissie Victorian fireplaces, dancing turtles with top hats, yellow/green/blue, two polyhedral dice. These are the answers to some ofNienke’s more important life questions, though not necessarily in that order. The exact significance of these questions – or the questions themselves, for that matter – is yet unknown, like most things in her life. As a firm believer in "I’ll see what happens," she spends a lot of time not really doing anything, which is why she likes studying English. Hobbies include drawing, watching British television, reading, playing video games, and pretending to be other people.

Kim Hoftijzer Co-production leader, photography If it would be possible to be Vishnu with time traveling powers, I'd want it. With a thousand interests the small town somewhere in a forgotten part of Holland was not really up my ally. So I fled.  As soon as I could, I hopped a plane to the US, a country that holds my unconditional love (Yep – I study American Studies, go figure.) My other loves are photography, graphic design, music, writing, reading, coffee and TV shows. Oh and theatre of course. I carry the proud position of co-production leader and self-acclaimed photographer and do-it-all.

Willem de Hoop Todd, Con Two, Officer This one goes by the name of Willem. He is 22 years old and a second year member of G.U.T.S. His passions include, but are not limited to, his study of English, acting, playing trombone, and too many other things to place in a single list. Nevertheless, no matter what he does, there is always time for him to make a bad pun or two. Despite having a few small parts in Vernon God Little he still attempts to be at every rehearsal and, of course, the drinks afterwards.

Yorick Juffer Vernon Little After being born in The Netherlands and spending most of his life moving from a country to country eventually ending up in Finland, Yorick decided to return to his roots and come back to Groningen to study nursing. He is an IB student where he managed to study Theatre Arts and Drama for 5 years so it was only natural that he would continue developing his talents and therefore join GUTS. In addition to that, he is keen on writing, reading, music, making movies and doing radio shows together with Bobby. Also, he is a tea junkie. It is safe to say that after travelling across half the world, Yorick has finally managed to find home in the big happy family of GUTS.

Eric Kortenschijl Treasurer / Lally, Team Leader After studying English Language and Culture and getting his teaching degree, Eric decided to keep hanging around the university and join GUTS. But alas, it never seems to end well for him. In Dorian Gray, he was viciously stabbed to death by the evil prettyboy. In Alice in Wonderland he first fell off a wall and shattered his fragile self and then he was imprisoned for eating the Queen of Hearts' tarts. Which he may or may not have done. This year Eric plays Eulalio Ledesma ('educated people call me Lally'). Will he live this time?

Bobby Makariev Heavy, Silas, Mr Abdini, Con One After studying Business for 4 years and graduating at the beginning of this year, Bobby decided it is high time he started doing what he loved- arts. So he made the second best decision of his life and joined GUTS. Originally from Bulgaria, he has been in Groningen for nearly 5 years now (and in case you are wondering, coming here was the first best decision of his life). Nowadays you can find him in the faculty of arts, studying KCM, writing his own play and novel, doing a radio show together with Yorick and working on a few other projects, which he will keep a secret for now. One thing is for sure though- he is not going anywhere any time soon.

Maybelline Massey Taylor, Clerk Maybelline is a law student at RUG and is heavily involved in the performing arts community. After having studied classical piano and singing for most of her life in Toronto, she opened a school for the arts in her hometown along with her sister, an (often-unemployed and starving) actress. Maybelline is thrilled to be a part of GUTS, which helps her to stay involved in the arts and work with other students with similar interests. Other hobbies include: ...that’s about it.

Inge van de Rijt Vain Gurie Inge is a fourth year student of English Language and Culture and after seeing two of the GUTS plays in her time on the board of the student society, she decided that it was time to try something different. Although she´d always been interested in theater, she´d never really thought about acting until now! Besides her new-found love for acting, Inge loves singing, art and reading. And even though her final year of studies keep her pretty preoccupied, she keeps her wednesdays open for rehearsals and often joins the GUTSies for a/some drink(s) after and regularly meets up with the gang for food or a movie! In the play she features as deputy sheriff Vaine Gurie, a rather insecure woman who uses her job to fain self-confidence and sees Vernon's case as an opportunity to gain respect from the Martirio community.

Leon van Roest Jonesy Nineteen-years old Leon was convinced he could not do anything. Then a lovely girl reminded him that he was very funny, therefore he should try acting! Now Vernon God Little turns out to be a not-so-funny play (ok it can be funny, but people get killed and stuff you know?), but Leon turned out to be a pretty darn good actor. Next to acting, Leon enjoys drinking alcohol, sleeping on other people's couches and eating eggs.

Eline Roosa Board Liaison / Pam As a true peoples person with a secret passion for theater, taking the step to go out and audition for GUTS was a very good move. As an English student the choice between Dutch and English theatre was not all that difficult either. In the play of Vernon God Little I will present Pam and whether typecast or not, I foresee that in the future you will hear me talk about food a LOT. You will usually find me in a place where lovely people surround me and therefore you will nearly always find me with GUTS. Always a positive person, it’s often been said that I hop my way through life and would probably even die smiling. Luckily all of this is allowed in GUTS, and therefore in GUTS I think that I have truly found my place.

Alex Rzepny PR Having realised she’s most inspired by what she either has no talent for or doesn’t understand (be it quantum chaos), Alex is now on a mission to raise awareness about GUTS. In the meantime, she tries to decide on which career to follow: interrogating psychopaths or spying on spies. She enjoys hanging out with horses, especially while renovating vintage wooden furniture, which is the best proof of her sociability. She’s given male names to all of her animals, most of them being female notwithstanding. She glorifies absurdity and appreciates absurdist philosophers. One of most terrifying things she can imagine is a military ship or imagining one. With her affection for dreary shores and other nostalgic landscapes, trippy art, and a peculiar taste in movies, Coffee and Cigarettes, she smartly escapes the crowds. Andy Warhol is believed to be her guardian angel; perhaps that’s the reason why she often ends up stoned in weird and abandoned places chilling with a friend or two, thinking about random stuff and eating carrots.  She’s pedantic and structured, which doesn’t prevent her from being confusing.According to latest analyses, she will develop a revolutionary scientific theory. In all likelihood it will be top secret.

Eline Schievink Leona Portraying a hunter, a bisexual hooker and one half of a semi-naked twin monster duo wasn’t enough for Eline. Theatre lured her back in and she now plays the part of a young woman, who cares more about her looks and a peanut butter sandwich than she does about her child. In other words, the perfect part where she can stay close to who she actually is. Pretty and gorgeous, minus the kid.

TJ da Silva Jesus TJ da Silva has worked in theater for a few years now. As a member of Stranger Things Have Happened he enjoys improvised theater. This form of theater has taught him the art of looking smarter than he actually is. In Vernon God Little, TJ takes on the role of Jesus, a character who, fortunately, is exactly as smart as he looks – if he looked a little better, that is. After all, he doesn't look that good anymore. Pity.

Logan van Steenderen Director This is Logan. He is directing a play. He is also crazy. And he writes. And he does loads of other stuff. Did we mention he's crazy? In a good way. Usually.

Jildau Stoelwinder Secretary, production leader Stepping down this year as chairwoman due to her stay in the USA last semester, Jildau is verily glad to be back at GUTS this year as secretary, but most importantly production leader. As a third year student of American Studies, she is almost done with her bachelor but has definitely not fulfilled her dreams. Despite the fact that she's more active in the fields of photography and film, she cannot be discouraged from searching a creative outlet in theatre; her high school love. As production leader it'll again be her job to annoy people continuously while bribing them with baked goodies. As they always say here: love goes through the stomach.

Ritwik Swain Dr Goossens I'm a nineteen year old, second-year Psychology student from Britain. My hobbies include cricket, listening to music, telling bad jokes and trying new things. I hope to creep everyone out to the max by playing Dr Goosens in Vernon God Little. I am also involved in the councils of the university and promoting studyinholland.co.uk in Britian.

Maike Timmerman Mom Maike is a bit of a Jill-of-all-trades: she teaches English, is learning to become a silversmith, writes all sorts of stuff including songs, plays in GUTS and sings in musical-theatre group Vals Alarm. Oh, and she's going to be singing in a bigband. Maike plays Vernon's mom, a part for which she's sure she was typecast. Ah well, what can you do?!

Britt Trofe Stagehelp (crew) Having just moved to Groningen this summer from the USA, Britt was missing many things back home. After settling into a job as an assistant teacher at the Groningse Schoolvereniging, she was feeling quite homesick for her theatre friends. She consequently joined GUTS because everyone knows, theatre people are theatre people. Britt is a woman of many talents, including singing, playing the piano, gymnastics, and even leaping tall buildings in a single bound (okay, maybe that last one is a lie...). Above all, Britt is so grateful to be involved in such a welcoming organization and looks forward to a great season!

Glenda Vasse Stagehelp (crew) Her goal in life is to become an evil scientist, which is why she studies Science Communication. She thinks every tv show could be improved by fire and explosions, which explains why she likes Mythbusters, Top Gear and the Eurovision Song Contest. She has no role in Vernon God Little, but will help out backstage. That is, if she's not too busy with that whole 'evil science' thing and sketch-writing.
